Collegium Musicale won EBU competition “Let the Peoples Sing”

Singers from all over the world congregated in the Finnish capital for the Finals of Let the Peoples Sing (LTPS), the Euroradio Choral Competition which took place at Helsinki’s Musiikkitalo (Music Centre) on 15 October 2017. It was preceded by a Gala Concert on 14 October. The winner of the adults category and the GrandPrix prize – Silver Rose Bowl- is Estonian chamber choir Collegium Musicale conducted by Endrik Üksvärav.

Collegium Musicale sang only the music of Estonian composers. Program was as follows:
Veljo Tormis “Arriving of the wedding guests” (From choral cycle “Forgotten Peoples”)
Arvo Pärt “Bogoroditse Djevo”
Erkki-Sven Tüür “Gloria” (from Missa Brevis)
Cyrillus Kreek “Õnnis on inimene”

LTPS has been a jubilant celebration of choral singing since 1961. The 2017 edition was a large-scale multimedia event thanks to YLE, the Finnish public broadcaster. It was broadcast live, not only by EBU radio organizations, but also on Finnish TV and streamed on the web. This means that chorus members sang to millions of listeners and viewers throughout Europe and beyond.

The finalists were chosen in a very competitive semi-final round on 9-10 January by a prestigious jury, who selected the prizewinners in each category and awarded the highly coveted Silver Rose Bowl to the best overall ensemble.

Jury members were:

  • Bob Chilcott (UK)
  • Bent Grønholdt (Chairman, Denmarks Radio)
  • Sigvards Kļava (Latvia)
  • Brian Newhouse (American Public Media)
  • Àlex Robles Fitó (Catalunya Ràdio)
  • Grit Schulze (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk)
  • Inari Tilli (YLE, Finnish Broadcasting Company)
